Notes
Part of the CMJ Music Festival: New Spirit, Andrew Vladik, moe. and Harpoon were also on the bill. Yolk played just before moe. and Harpoon played just after.
moe.'s set from this night is available here: http://www.archive.org/details/moe1995-09-07
Taper notes:
This is BARN12, the 12th in my continuing series of fresh archival transferring (and mastering) from my DAT collection. I can't exactly say I'm a fan of Yolk (they were a bit too hard/heavy for my tastes), though I did see & record them a number of times back in the day, mostly because they were on a bill with moe. or some other band I was there to see on the same night. You Yolk fans get the benefit, on this recording, of it having been recorded on the same DAT tape as moe.'s set from the same night. When I did the transfer of the moe. recording (already posted on archive.org) for BARN11, I also transferred this one. This is the classic Yolk lineup from the period just a few months after Jim Loughlin left moe. and joined Yolk full time. You can hear his driving drumming very clearly on this recording. Unfortunately the soundboard mix left a LOT to be desired (it was very shrill, with lots of high end, horns, and cymbols), but I have done my best to EQ it to be acceptibly listenable. Unfortunately the horns made it much tougher to EQ than moe.'s set, but I think it'll be worth your while. If you listen to the banter you can hear that they were having a lot of equipment problems during this show, so you'll also hear some crackles and other audio blemishes that represented what was happening onstage that night. I have not tried to clean any of that stuff up.
Recorded (9/7/95), transferred and mastered (Nov/Dec 2009) by Scott Bernstein

- Original recording: Soundboard -> Denon DTR80p -> DAT (master @16 bit/48khz); Transfer: Sony R500->Sound Devices 722; Mastered: Soundforge Audio Studio 10.0a - All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits. First applied 20 band Graphic EQ boosting the mid bass range (225-40hz), rolling off the low bass slightly (29 hz and below), cutting the high mids (mostly in the 1.3-3.6k range) and also rolling off the highs (5.1-15k). Then I applied slight volume normalization . Then I did the 48k sample rate conversion to 44.1k sample rate conversion using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter, and dithered back down to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, High dither settings. Tracked in CDWav. (Note the raw transfer files from my DAT are in my personal archives so if you think you could do a better job on this recording, by all means get in touch.)
